Wildlife Emergency Response Unit

Sponsored by Inter Pipeline Ltd.

When wildlife is impacted by an environmental event, such as flooding or oil spills, receiving treatment within the first few hours is crucial. They require expert care from organizations with the right expertise, government permits, and previous experience.

Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC)’s Wildlife Emergency Response Unit was sponsored by Inter Pipeline Ltd. and the Government of Alberta, through the Community Initiatives Program. It is the only one of its kind in Alberta and can be deployed throughout the province. This specialized unit provides mobile emergency assistance directly within or near the event site. It allows us to assist wildlife that cannot be relocated to a distant care facility.

During emergencies, one of the biggest challenges is to quickly get appropriate care for animals in urgent need. AIWC is able to provide the mobile treatment facility, and rehabilitation expertise. These factors can make the difference between life and death for a wild animal in need.
